Missouri Ag Groups Fight Back After HSUS Funding Revealed

Farm groups dig deep to thwart HSUS effort to defeat Amendment 1.

Just a day after the Missouri Ethics Commission posted online that the Human Society of the United States contributed  $375,000 toward a political action committee opposing the so-called “right to farm” constitutional amendment, Missouri farm organizations are digging deep to stop this final push to defeat the measure by out-of-state interest groups.

Today, the online Ethics Commission showed contributions from the Missouri Pork Association, Mo Ag PAC, Missouri Corn Growers and Missouri Ag Services totaling $140,750 to Missouri Farmers Care, one PAC supporting the right-to-farm measure, on the Aug. 5 ballot as “Amendment 1.”

The Missouri Farm Bureau also raised funds to support Amendment 1. In a released statement, Missouri Farm Bureau president Blake Hurst said that the contribution by HSUS to Missouri’s Food for America “reveals the true force and motives behind the opposition to Amendment 1.” He added that the amendment is being financed by “a major out-of-state extremist organization, in contrast to Missouri Farm Bureau’s Fund to Support Amendment 1, which has raised $125,822 and is being financed literally by thousands of family farmers and ranchers across the state.”

FIGHT FOR FARMING: Missouri farm groups are joining together to fight outside special interest groups who are seeking to defeat Amendment 1. The groups want to ensure that Missouri farmers have a future in producing food, fiber and fuel for generations to come.

Until July 22, the Missouri’s Food for America had $46,000 to fight the amendment, according to the ethics commission. The additional $375,000 will give a financial boost to those who oppose the amendment.

There are just 10 days before the voters go to the polls. Voters will be asked to decide “Shall the Missouri Constitution be amended to ensure that the right of Missouri citizens to engage in agricultural production and ranching practices shall not be infringed?”

If passed, Missouri would be the second state to have similar “right to farm” measure in the state constitution, along with North Dakota. Indiana also has a “right to farm” measure in its state law.

  1. Please spread far and wide….to any friends and/or family in Missouri! If this sort of legislation hasn’t directly affected you yet, you havem’t been grocery shopping in the last year! If that be the case, have you not noticed the cost of eat-in or take-out food from restaurants??? What about the price of a new purebred puppy? Just because you don’t live in Missouri, doesn’t mean you are not affected…….We are all affected! Watch the proposed legislations in your own state!
