Healdton, OK creates new unenforcable pet ordinance -THREE?!?

Mind you, I have no idea where the city of Healdton, OK is but they sure are making the news lately…first the animal shelter is shut down and seems no one is actually taking responsibility for the animal abuse that went on in the shelter nor can anyone say when it will reopen or who will take charge. Most certainly they will need to raise an awful lot of money to correct the conditions of the building SOOOOOOO…they passed a new city ordinance to limit the numbers of animals to a household to THREE-huh!? UNACCEPTABLE!!! Any not even enforceable accept maybe by fines and I guess that money will go into the till for the shelter so that when they finally do open the shelter doors, they can instantly fill it and need to make an expansion or killing spree to get rid of the unwanted animals-OH MY!!! Clearly council doesn’t care what happens to the unwanted as the shelter remains closed. Residents are told they can find homes for their animals or euthanize them…HOLY MOLY!!!

Bad enough they are known as a town that abuses animals, it’s telling it’s residence to euthanize their pets-HEARTLESS BASTARDS!!!

When is the next election?!? I do believe there will be an entirely new city counsel, and other city officials in the town of Healdton, OK!!! They can count on it…

Residents Not Happy With New Pet Ordinances In Healdton

Some people in the city of Healdton are unhappy after last night’s council meeting where new ordinances concerning family pets were approved.

Following the approval of new ordinances at Monday night’s meeting, city officials now say that people living in Healdton may only have three dogs and/or three cats for one residence.

“They chose to have three and or…three dogs three cats,” said City Manager Charles Clark. “The board felt that was plenty flexible.”

But some residents are not agreeing.

“When we asked them at the council meeting what do we do with our extra dogs, how do we pick and choose those? Their only answer they could give us, ‘Well you should find them a good home or you should euthanize them,'” said Paige James.

Paige James says she has close to 20 dogs at her home with six being personal pets while also operating a licensed kennel.

She doesn’t like the thought of choosing between her animals.

“You wouldn’t just give your child away because you have three children and then you have a fourth and you have to give one away because you have four children,” said James. “You would not do that, so absolutely I think most people would agree with me with paying $15, $20 more than have to get rid of that pet.”

Healdton council members say they do not plan to go door to door and check if residents are following the new ordinance.

“They would be fined for having an unlicensed dog because we would only license the three that were authorized by ordinance,” said Clark.

The council members did not specify the amount of the fine.

Less than 2 weeks ago the city’s animal shelter was shutdown after reports of several dogs dying during freezing temperatures.

City officials told us the dogs were sleeping on concrete and there weren’t any heaters in the facility.

The city manager said Monday the town’s animal shelter will remain closed until further notice.

The new ordinances are set to go into effect in 30 days.

  1. How many years has it been now since CHINA mandated that their PEOPLE COULD NOT HAVE MORE THAN ONE CHILD? OUR PETS ARE NOT OUR CHILDREN, BUT THEY DO TAKE UP A LARGE SPACE IN OUR HEARTS! IN CHINA, WHEN A FEMALE CHILD IS BORN, SHE IS EITHER KILLED OR ADOPTED OUT TO ANOTHER COUNTRY, SO, THEIR FAMILY NAMES CAN BE PRESERVED. Population control. WTH DOES LIMITS ON NUMBERS OF PETS HAVE TO DO WITH POOR INEXCUSABLE CITY RUN ANIMAL CONTROL AND MANAGEMENT OF A SHELTER? IT SEEMS AS IF THE TOWN IS TRYING TO GIVE THE CITIZENS SOMETHING TO WORRY ABOUT BESIDES THE TOWNS’ POSSIBLE AND PROBABLE BLATANT ANIMAL CRUELTY CHARGES. THAT MUST BE IT! GET EVEN WITH THE FOLKS WHO OWN THE ANIMALS BECAUSE IF THERE WERE NOT ANIMAL OWNERS, THEN THERE WOULD NEVER HAVE BEEN A NEED FOR THE SHELTER THUS NEVER ANY CHANCE FOR THE OBVIOUS NEGLECT AND ABUSE CHARGES TO BE FILED…..YES, THAT’LL SHOW ‘EM CITY COUNCIL! KIND OF LIKE LINING UP EVERY PERSON AT A FUNCTIOM AND WRITING THEM ALL A TICKET, BECAUSE ONE OF THEM HAD TO BE THE GUILTY ONE WHO MARKED ON THE BATHROOM WALL! JUST BACKLASHING!?!

    • I am waiting to see that someone or a group of citizens have filed suit against the city for animal cruelty!!!

  2. Hello, we live in Healdton and found your article while looking for animal laws in our little town. Everything you wrote is true and correct, and nothing has changed. No there are no new city officials, just the same ones that made these ridiculous laws in the first place. And the shelter hasn’t been updated and won’t be. They still think that shooting an animal is the best way of euthanizing them as it costs the town $25.00 per animal to take them to the nearest shelter that can either re-home them or humanely euthanize. (which is the state law by the way). This town breaks every animal the state has and thinks nothing of it. Recently one of the town law makers made a statement that according to state law all cats are feral. And then the newspaper quoted him on the front page as if it was true. No one ever bothered to actually check the law and make a correction. I contacted them and made a fuss, but to no avail. No apology or retraction was ever made. And no one has ever filed a law suit with regards to the animal cruelty. Unfortunately a lot of these people have those things happen to their animals while in their possession, and think it’s just part of life. It is still a very backwater type town. I learned that real fast when I moved here years ago. There are however some of us that do love our pets and take very good care of them. There is a saving grace, it’s just hard to see because it’s not among the law makers for the town. Great post.
