Zoo Wars: Press Statement

Another day begins at GW Exotics…

The day started as any other I am sure. The big employee meeting before the work begins. Joe and Rink have broken the staff into groups with which they work full time and what responsibilities they will handle. No two days are alike at this facility, as any facility like this one, with both Joe and Rink going over the duties at the end of each day as they do as each day begins. Both Joe and Rink constantly out in the park and also relying on team leaders for feedback as well as to see the work gets done. The facility is run like a well greased machine to provide for the animals…as well as it should be.

Facilities do not clean themselves, animals do not feed themselves and a very big responsibility just as you have responsibility for your family, they have taken on the responsibility of an entire zoo. Under constant improvements and with caging going up to suit animals needing placement as well as the constant job of keeping all the caging in good condition and repair. It creates an environment consistent for proper animal welfare and pleasing to the guests that arrive to see the zoo and what it beholds.

While most zoos have animals, this one is special in that it takes in for placement or responsibility for helping with placement of animals needing to be rehomed. Training is provided for employees and consistent with what is required however, the training at GW goes well beyond what is required. That being said, there is a protocol in place for safety purposes that are strictly enforced. Usually no one works entirely alone so for an incident to happen it would be a breach in protocol-we all make mistakes and the repercussions from any accident are always investigated, even when no animal is involved.

This past year there have been many improvements and new caging going up. Money was raised to help animals in the wild by the USZA and with Joe’s help. Joe is not some big burly guy. He’s got a kind heart and keeps a lot of qualified help around to see that the job is done and done correctly. Joe does more in one day than most people are even capable of doing!!! So why the attacks after an unfortunate incident and why the smutt!?! No matter what anyone says, or has said/will say, unless they go there and see for themselves by spending a day as if in his shoes; there is no way to comprehend the intricacies of owning such a facility.

Before you see it on the news today…from Joe Schreibvogel’s FB page…

Photo: You will see all kinds of lies on the internet with stories that are so far fetched you don't know what to believe. Fact, the employees arm was NEVER ripped off. OU Medical Center surgeons did a great job of saving her arm and the tissue to repair her arm. The protocols at the zoo and the quick response of the zoo medical staff and EMS is what made this whole incident turn out better than what it could have. Some other facilities are already bashing us to gain self profit from such a horrible accident but rest assured we have one of the safest parks around and care about our staff and animals. The park is open and we invite anyone and everyone to come see first and. Thank you for your continued prayers and support for our employee who was injured and the zoo.

Press Statement

Joe Schreibvogel

Wynnewood Oklahoma

Official Statement for an accident involving one of my tigers and a worker.

“On 10/5/2013 at aprox. 10;am a female worker violated safety protocol and placed her hand inside a adult male tiger cage. She was wearing a large goose down jacket which got bunched up inside the cage wire not allowing her to get her hand back outside the cage wire fast enough and the tiger grabbed her hand pulling her left arm through a 4 inch square hole. The staff responded as trained to a medical emergency and park medics were on the scene within 2 minutes and gave emergency medical attention to the staff member. Parks emergency protocol was activated and put into place which including calling a ground ambulance and activating air evac medical helicopter. She was transferred from the parks stretcher to the ambulance and transported to Pauls Valley Hospital helipad as the nearest air evac had to respond from Duncan Oklahoma. From there she was air lifted to OU Medical Center where she is in surgery  and stable. This was an employee error of violating the safety protocols of placing any part of the body inside a cage. The tiger will not be put down and our thoughts and prayers are with the member of our staff that was injured. During the entire event she was awake and saying it was her fault and plans to return to work. Her family has not been notified so her name will not be released.”

Updates throughout the day yesterday:

“Update. she is still in surgery and her arm was still attached when they flew her out of here, we do not know anything else at this time other than she is stable and was awake the whole way to the hospital, we will keep you all posted, she was not mauled or anything else the news might say, she made a mistake and we will all learn from it, but she wants to come back to work.”

“New update from the hospital, at this point she is out of surgery and they saved her arm, she has a long road of repairs ahead of her but this is a miracle and thanks for the prayers everyone.”

“CB and others can use this how they want, but never forget the truth and that is she has had more accidents at one place than any of us. My main focus is my staff member, clearing the parks name as it was an accident and the rest can all go to hell…+”

“I just spoke to the member of our park on the phone. She (we are still not releasing her name as the family has not been contacted yet) is out of surgery, awake, and talking on the phone. Her comment is I still have my arm. Thank God she is in better spirits than I am right now.”

The employee broke protocol-nothing more…No matter the media hype, what Carole Baskin’s spin on this (and others) will be, it is what it is-An accident.. it was an unfortunate accident. No doubt, Animal Rights Extremists/Terrorists will be all over this as if breaking protocol was a reason to ban these animals…It most certainly is NOT! And yes, the arguments have already begun.

The most recent update indicates that the surgery went well and that she is doing well and that they were able to save her arm. Her name will be released as soon as her family is notified.

This is one of the nicest facilities in the country that is always up on protocol and proper training of their employees. No matter the media hype and the tales that will surely come  in the following days; I do not see the facility being held responsible for this unfortunate accident.

Best wishes going out to Joe and his staff at the park as well as a quick recovery for his employee!!!

Disclaimer connected to tis blog…Things said are of my opinion and the opinion of others…Stay tuned -B

  1. Always consider the source of where you get information…BCR is no authority on Big cats!!!

There’s plenty of DIRT on Carle Lewis Baskin of Easy Street AKA BCR…Had tigers and other big cats in the state of FL without a permit for more than a year until she was caught…that’s CAUGHT…What no sign to tell the neighbors there were big cats there…no sigh and hiding back there at the old landfill she now calls a sanctuary and far from being without incident…She’s had MANY!!! I don’t imagine she likes to talk about that much or that they never found her husband’s body…

Baskin never includes Easy Street /Big Cat Rescue/BCR on her lists or herself where there were numerous incidents because she had NO protocol in place…She is now joined HSUS and inflicting terror on private owners using HSUS and other extremists organization to gather more ‘loot’ and the only reason has become GFAS-NOT considered a wildlife sanctuary by Florida standards so perpetrating a lie for donations…frankly, people with that kind of money are totally capable of supporting their hobby themselves and do not need your hard earned money that will NOT be used for animal care…Baskin has no 504-c-4 to use money to promote legislation to ban these animals from private animal ownership…and only of recent are we seeing any improvements at the landfill (BCR facility) as the pressure has increased to improve the conditions there.

Baskin has a glowing star in the Hall of SHAME!!!

  2. Carol Baskin should be ashamed to attack anyone over an accident or injuries. If it weren’t so provoking it would almost be laughable after all the escapes and injuries she has had at her place.
