The Toronto Zoo elephants need your help NOW! Over the last two years there has been an intense battle between Toronto Zoo staff and Concerned Citizens and very vocal Animal Rights proponents who are trying to send the Zoo’s elephants to the Performing Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) in California.

Throughout this battle PAWS and their Canadian partners Zoocheck have repeatedly denied that there had been TB positive elephants die at their facility much less admit that there STILL is TB in their elephant herd. After much research and many Freedom of Information Requests they FINALLY admit that Tuberculosis IS there yet they STILL want to remove the three HEALTHY elephants from Toronto and move them to California.

You think this is bad? You think it couldn’t get any worse?? Originally Bob Barker of “The Price is Right” fame offered to put up $800,000 to $1,000,000 to FLY the three to California. It seems now he has changed the terms of his offer and is blaming zoo personnel. The company that is in charge of the move, another activist leaning group (Active Environments) who has never moved 3 protected contact elephants like this before, has decided to hire a horse transportation company to TRUCK the elephants five and a half days and 2,542 miles. These are older elephants, two of whom haven’t traveled since they were young and the third has NEVER traveled, yet these animal “welfare” specialists seem to think it is OK to crate them, load them in a trailer and let them stand in their own FECES and URINE for over FIVE days. One can only imagine that any hay or grain that may be given to them will be shoved through the bars and would soon become urine soaked as well.

There’s more….The USDA has a transportation rule that only allows for animals to be in transport up to 28 hours without being off loaded. PAWS has petitioned the USDA to grant a waiver of this rule so they can skip the five and a half days drive and attempt to drive 65+ hours nonstop. How can this be advocating for these animals? If the USDA waives this rule once it will then have to do so again for circuses and private owners who at least off load their animals to water and clean the transport vehicles.

One must ask the question, If a Circus or AZA facility in the US had TB+ animals yet wanted to bring three healthy elephants into their herd would that be allowed by USDA?? How can this be acceptable? There is another factor here. The USDA’s own Elephant Specialist has spoken at PAWS animal rights seminars countless times and also has close ties to Active Environments lead person on this job. This Specialist has ALREADY looked the other way by allowing PAWS to bury their last deceased African elephant WITHOUT taking tissue samples of a mass in her lung (which is against USDA necropsy guidelines), thus allowing PAWS to escape any scrutiny ANOTHER TB+ test would bring. Upon receiving a complaint this same specialist was sent in to evaluate the situation and her report claimed “bio security at PAWS was OK”

There are TWO other viable options. One would be to remodel their home facilities so they would be more comfortable in the winter OR to send them half the distance to the National Elephant Center (NEC) in Florida. There they would be integrated with other HEALTHY elephants and they could socialize and thrive with a multigenerational herd. The NEC is run by the American Zoological Association (AZA) and these girls would continue to be handled with love and attention and receive PROPER vet care from PROFESSIONALS. Moreover they would not be used as pawns to attack circuses and other zoological facilities.

This is a perfect example of the activists and a Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries (GFAS) facility trying to raise money USING animals with no regard to their health or final disposition.

What you must do:
Email Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack, agsec@usda.gov
(RE: Toronto Zoo Elephants Dear Secretary Vilsack) and remind him:

1) The APHIS Division of the USDA is responsible for SAFEGUARDING, among other animals, elephants. Condoning the transfer of three HEALTHY elephants to a facility that has had MULTIPLE TB+ deaths, and CONTINUES to have TB on the grounds today, is unacceptable.

2) Allowing three elephants who have no travel experience whatsoever to be crated and chained in Toronto and trucked across the United States for more than FIVE days, or waiving the 26 hour rule and allowing a 65+ hour nonstop trip, will be overwhelmingly stressful and is cruel and unusual. They will not be off loaded, or allowed to lie down and rest their tired legs throughout the trip. Several of their keepers fear they won’t survive. USDA will lose ALL credibility as an animal welfare agency by turning a blind eye to this.

3) Any actions allowed by either Active Environments, or PAWS during the transportation of the Toronto Zoo elephants will be setting the new (lower) standards of care that will then govern ALL future elephant transportation issues and may, in some instances, allow past Administrative Law rulings to be overturned.
4) Ask him WHY the APHIS Division and their elephant specialist have let this get so far?

We are asking you to CC the following:

Toronto Mayor Ford mayor_ford@toronto.ca
Toronto Zoo Board zoobd@toronto.ca
Zoo CEO jtracogna@torontozoo.ca

Please use your own words, it will make this that much more effective if it is not in a form letter. Toka, Thika, and Iringa thank you, their keepers, staff and concerned citizens thank you, and all of us at the USZA thank you as well.

Please note, The GFAS is HSUS-AGAIN using animals to make money with no reguard to animal welfare!!!

animal seizures and rescues are being conducted by a very sophisticated network of

organized crime who have developed a very sophisticated scheme by which they are

criminalizing longstanding animal and livestock owners; divesting them of

ownership of entire herds of livestock and commercially valuable animals.

all of it done at taxpayer expense and thru a highly developed scheme to collect

follow the animals…follow the money!!!
