Cat killing controversy in Stryker

Williams County, OH – The Stryker Police Department is under investigation for allegedly killing cats and dumping them in the Tiffin River.

No criminal charges have been filed yet. However, the case has been sent to the prosecutor’s office in Bryan for review. The center of the investigation is stray cats. According to the complaint, Stryker officers trapped and shot the cats and then threw their carcasses into the Tiffin River.

The Village of Stryker has a cat problem.

59-year-old Ada Pierson has three house cats. For years she has also been feeding about a dozen strays outside.

“They’re not being fed and they’re not being taken care of,” says Pierson. “I felt sorry for them.”

But those cats are now gone. Pierson says in January Stryker police officers trapped and killed the cats.

“They were either shot or they were drowned,” says Pierson. “I think it’s horrible, they did not deserve what got. Why Stryker Police thought it was their duty to do something, I don’t know.”

Pierson contacted the Williams County Humane Society and an outside agency, the Fulton County Sheriff’s Department, handled the complaint from a Humane Officer.

“We have a very good police department,” says Stryker Mayor Dan Hughes. “We have well trained officers.”

Hughes doesn’t want to comment on specifics, but he does say there is an ordinance to address nuisance animals.

“I believe that is some of the gray issue that is involved in this particular investigation,” says Hughes. “The department also has discretion on how they enforce the different ORC’s and guidelines.”

“Cats are cats,” says Arlen Schmucker, a farmer in Stryker. “They’re out on the farm running around, they’re wild, hey.”

Schmucker says, “Who cares?” He believes the prosecutor has more important issues to deal with.

“I think people are over sensitive to the inhumane issue,” says Schmucker.

Pierson wants charges filed against the police officers for allegedly shooting and drowning the cats.

“It is wrong to harm an animal, more so to kill it,” says Pierson.

The Fulton County Sheriff’s Department has completed its investigation. The case now is in the hands of the prosecutor in Bryan.
